November Alumni Meeting
at the High School

Monday, November 14, 2022
7:00 p.m. Conference Room

(Adjacent to the Media Center)

It's hard to believe that seven weeks have passed since our last alumni meeting. At that meeting we had the opportunity to share in a presentation by John Blonski ('66). John's series of adventures with his brother Paul, began in Independence, with fast cars and then evolved into sailboat racing! John shared stories about going head-to-head against the elite sailors of North America. If you missed the September meeting, you can catch up with John at Monday's November meeting. This is the final meeting of 2022!

Please join us for friendship, fellowship, and even a cookie or two. Oh, and we will have a brief business meeting too! See you at 7:00 p.m., in the conference room near the Media Center.

Go Blue Devils!

Independence High School Alumni Association

The Alumni Association's
High School Yearbook Library

By Bob Wagner ('66)
The Alumni Association is grateful to Pam (Malloy) Blair, I.H.S. Class of 1966, for her generous donation of I.H.S. yearbooks from 1929 and 1930. 1929 is our oldest yearbook!

The yearbooks belonged to Pam's Uncle "Willie" (her mother's brother), Dr. William F. Kubicek II, who was an 8th grader in the 1929 Yearbook and a 9th grader in 1930. Both yearbooks included class pictures for the grades 7-11 in addition to individual pictures for seniors. William was born in 1915 and graduated in 1933. He served as an Army Medic during WWII and he later served as a Surgeon at St. Luke's Hospital in Cleveland, and he was the Head of Surgery at Marymount Hospital.

From 1926 to 1957, William's parents, Bill & Lillian, operated the Kubicek's Grocery and Meat Market which stood next to the old high school/middle school on Brecksville Road (demolished in 2017). The Dollar Bank is built on the site of the old Kubicek store. As with many Independence families, the Kubicek and Blair families have many generations of Independence graduates. Pam's mother, Betty Kubicek, born in 1925 was Class of 1942, Pam Malloy Blair, born in 1948 was Class of 1966, and Pam's son, Jason, born in 1969 was Class of 1987.
